The Spring season in Cayucos marks the best time of year for Kite Surfing. Although with mild winds throughout the year, it is common to catch optimum conditions frequently in the area. When learning to kite surf, the first key point to know is analyzing wind direction. It is important to always ride side shore or side-on shore winds. Direct onshore winds can lead to serious accidents if something goes wrong. Wind quality – steady is the key word for new kiteboarders.

The area near Cayucos Pier has a decent amount of rocks to the North and South, although the actual Pier itself is considered a beach break. With that in mind, for the beginner Kite Surfer it would be advised to explore some of the beaches a miles South of Cayucos Pier near Studio Drive. There is a long stretch of beach break South of Studio drive that is very popular amongst Kite Surfers. There is a decently long stretch of beach that is void of major rock formations, and has a great coastal direction for frequent side shore winds.
